SAVANNAH - Marjorie Marge H. McCowan, 82, died Monday, May 26, 2008 peacefully in her home.
She was born April 27, 1926 in Altoona, PA, one of four daughters of the late John and Harriet Swoope Hemphill. Marge graduated from Altoona High School in 1944. She then attended and graduated from Penn State University in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Textile Chemistry. Marge was president of the Alpha Mu Chapter of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and represented them at their National Convention in Banff, Canada her senior year.
On September 9, 1950, Marge married Frank H. McCowan Jr. of Swarthmore, PA, also a 1948 graduate of Penn State University, whom she met the year before while working a summer job in Ocean City, NJ. Early in her marriage, Marge worked as a chemist at a textile manufacturing plant in Philadelphia. The young couple also lived in Lakewood, OH and Erie, PA in the early years, before moving to Berwyn, PA to raise their children. They moved to The Landings on Skidaway Island, Savannah, GA after Frank retired in 1985. They were married for over 52 wonderful years before Frank passed away in 2003.
Marge enjoyed traveling and her greatest happiness came from visiting and vacationing with her family. She was an active member and avid volunteer at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church where she helped in the office, kitchen, Sunday schools and summer church camps. She was involved with numerous charities and participated in the mentoring program at Hesse Elementary School. Always active, Marge enjoyed golf, bridge, water aerobics and line dancing. She had a keen sense of humor and the ability to live life to its fullest. She loved and was loved by her family and a multitude of friends.
Marge is survived by her three children, daughter Barbara Taylor and her husband Bruce of Downingtown, PA, son Jack McCowan and his wife Leslie of Hopkinton, MA, son Dave McCowan and his wife Leann of Dallas, TX and her six grandchildren: Ryan Maloney, Adam Taylor, Jennifer McCowan, Brian McCowan, Scott McCowan and Chad McCowan. She is also survived by two sisters, Louise Kurtz of Lititz, PA and Dorothy Lynch of Latrobe, PA along with nieces and nephews and preceded in death by her sister, Helen Waag of Lakewood, OH.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church at 11:00 am with a reception immediately following for family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway, Savannah, GA 31411 and to the Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion, 225 Candler Drive, Suite 204, Savannah, GA 31405.
